Connected in Crisis: Free Emergency Preparedness Kit and Mentoring for People with Disability in Bundaberg

People with disability often face additional challenges during natural disasters and health emergencies. Accessing reliable information, understanding digital health systems and knowing who to contact for help can make a significant difference in staying safe and connected during these events. The Connected in Crisis program is helping address this gap by offering free one-on-one mentoring sessions and emergency preparedness kits for people with disability living in the Bundaberg region.
Connected in Crisis is designed to build confidence and practical skills that help people prepare for emergencies and stay connected to health services when they need them most. Through personalised mentoring sessions, participants work with a trained mentor who guides them through important information and tools that can help during a crisis. These sessions are delivered at a pace that suits the participant and use clear language and accessible approaches.
As part of the program, every participant receives a free Emergency Preparedness Kit valued at approximately $85. The kit is designed to help people stay safe and informed during an emergency and includes a range of practical items such as an emergency kit bag, wind-up radio, battery operated fan, torch, first aid kit, whistle, water bottle and other essential items. Having these supplies ready in advance can help people respond more quickly and confidently if a disaster occurs.
During the mentoring session, participants will also learn how to use digital tools and local information sources that are important during emergencies. This includes understanding how to access health apps and services during a disaster, where to find emergency alerts and reliable information, how to locate and use the Bundaberg Disaster Dashboard, and who to contact for help in an emergency situation. The aim is to make these systems easier to understand and more accessible for people with disability.
The program is available for people with disability living in the Bundaberg region and sessions can be delivered at disability service organisations or another suitable location. This makes it easy for providers to organise mentoring sessions for their clients and ensure they receive both practical support and emergency resources.
Connected in Crisis is supported by the Resilient CARE program, a partnership between Country to Coast Queensland and Australian Business Volunteers, with funding provided by the Australian Government.
