Hands-On Teen Art Workshop - Printmaking with Kaz Stanton
If you’ve got a teen who likes art that feels a bit raw, tactile and experimental, printmaking can be a great fit. It’s not about being “perfect” it’s about trying things, layering textures, and seeing what happens when you ink and print your own marks. Youth Week: Printmaking with Kaz Stanton is a relaxed, hands-on workshop where young people can explore storytelling through art and take home something they’ve made themselves. It’s also a nice option for teens who enjoy creative activities but don’t always love big groups or high-pressure settings.
This Youth Week session is led by artist Kaz Stanton and introduces participants to drypoint etching using upcycled everyday materials. Teens will learn the process step-by-step how to scratch into a surface, apply ink, and print their own layered artwork. The workshop encourages young people to build an image that reflects their own ideas of home, memory and place, and participants are invited to bring along a few reference images (photos of home, places they love, or locations that hold meaning) to use as inspiration. No prior experience is needed and all materials are included. The workshop is for ages 12–18, costs $15, and runs at the Bundaberg School of Arts Centre Bundaberg Central.
Creative workshops like this give teens space to slow down and express themselves in a way that doesn’t rely on words. Printmaking is especially good for building confidence because the process is forgiving you can keep experimenting, reworking, and layering until you find something you like. It also teaches practical skills (tools, technique, patience) while still leaving plenty of room for personal style. As part of Queensland Youth Week, it’s a chance to celebrate young people’s ideas and voices and to remind them that their stories and perspectives matter.
