EASTER FACTS

Easter always calls for a grand celebration and is considered one of the most significant celebrations in the Christian calendar.

Like most families in the Wide Bay we love cerebrating Easter! It is a great time of year, the weather is lovely and warm, but not too warm, it is school holidays and you get to eat chocolate!

The best part for us is our son's birthday usually falls during this time.  Every year we celebrate Easter at Woodgate, just up the coast from Bundaberg, it is a beautiful, lazy seaside town that comes to life every Easter with a mix of local fairs and activities for kids and adults.

Did you know:

• The specialty of Easter in Australia lies in the hosting of a unique agricultural show in Sydney known as “the Royal Easter Show”, where the nation's best produce is exhibited. It also consists of displays of farm animals. Other highlights include firework, hosting of parades, joy rides, delicious food and other fun activities for kids.

• Easter has been named after Eastre, an Anglo-Saxon goddess. The symbols of the goddess were the hare and the egg.

• The first Easter basket was given the appearance of a bird's nest.

• Chocolate eggs were made for the first time in Europe, in the 19th century. Till date, they remain one of the favorite Easter treats.

• Easter is the top-selling confectionery holiday in the west, second only to Halloween.

• As per the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest Easter egg made till date, was just over 25-ft high and was made of chocolate and marshmallow. Weighing at 8,968 lbs., the egg was supported by an internal steel frame.

• Egyptians were initially the ones who exchanged eggs to symbolize the resurrection of Christ. It was later that the tradition was passed down to early Christians.
