Sensory Play with Frozen Dinosaur Eggs
Sensory Play with Frozen Dinosaur Eggs
This week at Wide Bay Kids Playgroup our theme was Dinosaurs and the Prehistoric Age! We had a fantastic time painting dinosaur eggs, stamping dinosaur tracks, making dinosaur playdough scenes and building an erupting volcano in the sandpit!
The kids favourite activity of the day was playing with frozen dinosaur eggs in our Ice Age sensory bin……..the children intently watched the trapped dinosaurs peeking through their icy homes. They touched and held the eggs discovering the very cold sensation of the ice – and as the eggs slowly melted more and more of the dinosaur’s body was revealed. Is that a tail or the head? Is it a T-rex or a Triceratops?
We had so much fun with this activity that we thought we would show you how to make your own at home.
What you need:
- mini plastic dinosaurs
- party balloons
- water for freezing
- scissors
- container for your sensory bin
What you do:
- Pull and stretch the neck of a balloon
- Blow it up and hold for about 10 secs to stretch it a little more
- Carefully push a dinosaur inside the balloon (fiddly but possible)
- Fill the balloon with water and tie it up
- Place the filled balloons inside your freezer for at least 4 hours
- When frozen cut off the balloon top and peel away to reveal frozen dinosaur egg
- Place in your icy sensory bin and play!
My tips
Don’t forget to plan ahead for this activity! It may take a day or two for your dinosaur eggs to freeze, depending on your freezer. When you tie off the balloon make sure there are no air bubbles inside. Once the eggs are frozen start setting the scene in your sensory bin. We used translucent coloured stones for extra decoration in our bin.
This is a really fun activity for young children of all ages. I repeated this activity at home with my primary school aged children and they loved it! They even conducted their own science experiment by pouring salt on top of the frozen dinosaur eggs to see if they would melt quicker.
We love sensory bin activities at playgroup how about you? Do you have any great dinosaur themed activities you would like to share with me? If so please leave a message in the comments below I’d love to hear from you.
