Tried and tested fun for School Holidays
Tried and tested fun for School Holidays
I don’t have school-aged children, but I love it every time the holidays roll around. While not in school, my kids go to playgroup and have done gymnastics, swimming or music as well – all of which take a break during the school holidays.
I love the break from routine, from having to be somewhere on certain days by certain times. I love that it frees my days up to do whatever I want.
I love it for about the first week……… then the realisation hits that I have nothing for the kids to do and no extra outlets for them to burn off their excessive energy – what am I going to do with these boys week in, week out, until their activities start again?
There is only so much shopping and visiting shopping centres one family can do. Only so many times you can handle the Peppa Pig or Wiggles ride. Open areas and my boys don’t mix and the hot weather hasn’t helped either.
Thankfully at Christmas time there is generally plenty of family around and lots of plans to full fill. And if you’re lucky a husband or partner home to help entertain the kids for a week or two.
This week, my hubby went back to work, and we are still a few weeks away from our normal, activity-filled routine.
I often take to mummy blogs and Facebook pages for inspiration on what to do with the kids, but most of the time it just makes me feel inadequate for not filling the day with the most creative, most educational and most sensory of tasks.
So, for my young boys, I have just turned to tried and tested staples, such as Legos, trains, play dough, puzzles and painting or drawing. At 3 and 17 months, the trouble with setting up any special activities are outweighed by my 3 year old’s very short attention span, or my 17 month olds desire to a) put everything in his mouth and/or b) swipe at everything………especially the messy stuff.
Maybe as they get older I will become more adventurous with craft and games we can all do. But for now, I have found that spending a bit more time playing with them and less time doing things around the house has been keeping the stir-crazy behaviour at bay.
We love to attend locally organised events or activities. Visit the events calendar here to find out whats on around the Wide Bay. What are your best boredom busters or tips for filling the school-holiday days?
