Things to do at Kellys Beach Resort
Animal Encounters
Toads, lizards, bugs and spiders! Our WBKs absolutely loved seeking out all the big and little critters that call Kelly's Beach Resort home.
The Eco-Certified resort is located a block back from the beach on 5.5 acres of gardens and is home to many friendly animals. We spotted plenty of lizards, lots of tiny baby toads, beautiful butterflies and plenty of friendly birds.
We did lots of walking around the grounds searching for different animals. We ventured off the paths too, stomping through puddles looking for interesting creatures.
Scooting & Riding
With plenty of shady pathways winding throughout the resort, our WBKs had lots of fun scooting around the paths.
The resort is a quick walk to the beach, on a mostly sealed pathway. Once on the esplanade you can walk, scoot or ride right the way to the Skate Bowl at Nielsons Beach (almost 8km round trip). If you don't have room to bring your own bike, they are available for hire at the resort.
Swimming
The swimming pool area is set up perfectly for families catering for children of different ages and swimming abilities. The 'beached' children's pool is ideal for little kids, perfect for wading in shallow water.
Our WBK's enjoyed using the shallow water to practice their handstands and also enjoyed the larger pool for pool games and swimming laps. Kellys Beach South is a short 5 minute walk from the resort. The closest patrolled beach (Kellys Beach) is located a little further along the esplanade.
Tennis
Never having played a game of tennis certainly made for an interesting time for our WBKs.
Lots of laughs (and a few tears) and two missing balls later, we abandoned ship and voted to hit the pool. The court, rackets and balls are available to hire from the resort.
Games Room!
A hit with our WBKs! The two arcade games, air hockey table and pool table are neatly located just beside the pool and sauna area. How convenient!
Table equipment and change available from resort reception.
Mon Repos Turtle Experience
Combining a stay at Kelly's Beach Resort with a visit to the Mon Repos Turtle Centre is an absolute must!
Between November and late March you can join a Ranger guided tour to see nesting sea turtles (November - January) or baby turtle hatchlings (January - March). Watch as the magnificent female turtle lays her eggs, or see the young turtle hatchlings dig through the sand and scramble their way down the beach and into the ocean.
Our WBKs absolutely loved this experience! We all learnt all about marine turtles, conversation projects and research programs currently running.
Tours are run in the evening departing from the Mon Repos Turtle Centre which is located at 141 Mon Repos Road, Mon Repo. The Turtle Centre is a 10 minute drive from Kelly's Beach Resort.
When the Centre opened at 7pm we were allocated into groups (Group 1, Group 2 etc). As turtles don't arrive on cue, there was a period of waiting, so we explored the Turtle Centre (learning lots about turtles and our environment), we listened to rangers give talks and we watched a documentary screening in the outdoor amphitheater.
The rangers suggest bringing board games, books, tablets or other activities to keep children entertained while waiting. This is a must do as sometimes you can wait several hours!
As the turtles arrived, a Ranger guided our group onto the beach where we got to see the enormous lady lay her eggs. A truly wonderful experience that our family will never forget!
The turtle tours have limited places and book out quickly. Tour tickets range in price from $6.45 per child, $12.40 per adult or a family of four you can purchase a group tour for $29.75. Book your Mon Repos Turtle Tour here or book at the resort reception.
