Summer Reading Club 2021-2022 School Holiday Challenge
Summer Reading Club 2021-2022 School Holiday Challenge
1 – 31 December. All Ages
Online at www.summerreadingclub.slq.qld.gov.au
The Summer Reading Club is a fun, free program delivered annually by the State Library of Queensland online and in public libraries and Indigenous Knowledge Centres across Queensland to encourage children to keep reading through the summer!
The summer school holidays are a time for kicking back, catching up with friends, playing outside, and enjoying the freedom that comes with being young, having no responsibilities, and no homework for the summer!
All this free time can however result in a loss of learning gained during the school year, which is often referred to as the ‘Summer Slide.’
The great news is basic skills are easy to maintain as your kids enjoy their free time! The Summer Reading Club inspires opportunities to keep your kids engaged all summer long by reading, playing, exploring and discovering which is what the research has identified as the antidote to this phenomenon.
“Join the Club! Join the Challenge!”
To help keep children motivated there are 40 challenges online to complete each summer. In addition, children can also share book reviews, artwork and comment on other Club Member posts.
Challenge activities are suitable for all ages and can be completed multiple times!
To start earning fun rewards, including digital badges, children and young people will need to join the Club.
To do this, parents will need to:
- Ask an adult to help you join the club. It’s free and easy to register. Adults can create multiple child/reader profiles.
- Sign in as a child/reader.
- Go to your profile and select an avatar. Complete challenges to unlock more!
- Start completing challenges to earn badges, XP and unlock new avatars.
- Don’t forget to post your own photos and share the fun!
Once you’ve joined, you can start exploring and completing reading challenges and posting book reviews and artwork.
As challenges are completed online, digital rewards unlock for collection! Who will be your family’s Summer Reading Champion?
The Summer Reading Club encourages children to select their own reading material during the summer.
This encourages participation by all readers of all ages no matter one’s interest! The goal is to read something, in some way, every day – rather than marking off a set list of titles.
The online challenges and Club Member book reviews are also a great place to find inspiration for what to read next.
And if you are still not sure what to read, we know your local librarian will be happy to offer up some recommendations!
Parents, your children need you to be their champions! Research tells us that when adults are part of a child’s reading journey their influence can help their children become lifelong learners.
The Summer Reading Club provides opportunities for families to work together so all children can complete the online activities. We hope you have fun working together. To inspire your family’s reading adventures why not set aside time each day to complete a challenge, or encourage reading moments by working through the challenges yourself. Though you might not earn a badge online, we know you will become your child’s reading legend as you work alongside them.
And remember, the little readers in your home may need help to complete the challenges and share them online!
To compliment the array of online activities here on this site, your public library is keen to help you and your family combat the Summer Slide by providing FREE access to a variety of reading materials, resources and holiday programming, to encourage and nurture a love of literature and recreational reading all summer long!
To learn more about your local library and the activities they are offering this summer we recommend visiting their website of Facebook page.
