10 reasons to visit your local library
Thinking about taking your bub or little one to the library but not sure if it’s worth the fuss? Maybe you think they’re too young, or you're holding out until they can crack open a book themselves. You might even worry they'll stir up a ruckus, treat the place like a playground, or just won't be keen on what's happening there. Fret not, families! We're here to tell you that Queensland's public libraries and Indigenous Knowledge Centres are tops for a ripper time with young kids – and we've got ten corkers of reasons why.
1. Warm, welcoming vibes
Forget the days of hushed tones and frosty atmospheres – today's libraries and Indigenous Knowledge Centres are crackling with warmth and welcome. Many have fab spaces tailored just for kids, and some are entirely kiddie-centric! So, get ready for a big, friendly hug when you walk through those doors.
2. Ignite a love of learning
Your local library is like a treasure trove of knowledge and creativity for all ages. Whatever your little one's into, chances are the library's got something to float their boat. And if they don't, they can probably snag it from another library or online.
3. Let imagination run wild
Books aren't just about learning – they're about venturing into wild and wonderful worlds, both real and imagined. They can whisk you away to any place or time, introduce you to all sorts of folks, critters, and cultures, and spark that magical spark in your kid's noggin.
4. Fun starts from day one
Most Queensland libraries and Indigenous Knowledge Centres dish out free sessions like First 5 Forever Baby Play, Rhyme Time, and Story Time. They're chock-a-block with songs, games, and giggles, and they're designed to give you the goss on how to keep the good times rolling at home. Plus, you don't even need to be a member to join in!
5. Beat the heat (or rain)
Queensland weather's about as predictable as a roo on a trampoline. Need a cool escape from a scorching day? Or a dry spot when it's raining cats and dogs? Your local library's got your back – rain, hail, or shine.
6. A trip down memory lane
Remember the thrill of picking out books, filling out those checkout cards, and diving into your stash at home? That magic's still alive and kicking, even if checkout cards look a bit different now. Take your little one for a trip down memory lane – you'll get to relive your faves and make new ones together.
7. Start them young
Your bub's ready to soak up the world from day one, and reading, playing, singing, and chatting with them is a top-notch way to kickstart their learning journey. Librarians are full of handy tips to get you started, so don't be shy about asking for a nudge in the right direction.
8. It's more than just books
Books are ace, but did you know many libraries also dish out movies, games, music, mags, and e-books? While your kiddo picks out their bedtime stories, you can dive into a whole world of entertainment both in-person and online.
9. Community vibes
Libraries are more than just book warehouses – they're buzzing hubs where folks from all walks of life come together. Your little ones will soak up those good vibes and make some ace mates along the way, all while feeling right at home.
10. Best of all, it's free!
Yep, you read that right – joining your local library won't cost you a cent. From the tiniest newborn to the oldest sage, everyone's welcome. So, grab your bub, head down to your local library, and get ready for a world of adventure – all for free!
