Balloon Stamp Painting

Balloon Stamp Painting
We love balloon stamp painting at Wide Bay Kids playgroup!
As the name suggests we used balloons to stamp and paint with. I loved this activity, not only for its fun factor, but also for the opportunity to help the children identify colours. I found that by matching each balloon to the same coloured paint the children could participate in a colour matching game.
By encouraging the children to keep the balloon with its corresponding paint colour, I hoped to discourage paint mixing that can quickly lead to a whole lot of brown! I did this for the initial part of the activity, and then let the children mix and create to their heart’s desire.
Here’s the steps to some balloon stamp painting fun!
What you need:
- round party balloons of different colours
- poster paint preferably the same colours as your balloons
- paper
- paint palette of your choice (I used 2L ice-cream containers so the balloons would not blow away)
What to do:
- Pour paint into palettes
- Blow up balloons to about the size of a baseball
- Tie off the balloon
- Place balloon into the same coloured paint
- Get your paper ready
- Now paint away by using stamping and dragging motions
I hope you love this activity as much as we did. One tip – make sure for younger toddlers to keep the balloon size relatively small, so as to match their tiny hands. I found when the balloons were too big it was a little tricky for our toddlers to stamp with one hand. We have also tried stamping and painting with potatoes, toy dinosaurs and toy cars. Can you suggest some new techniques for our playgroup to try? I’d love to hear your ideas.
