Guess the Hidden Numbers or Letters Game

Guess the Hidden Numbers or Letters Game
This is a great activity for encouraging letter and number recognition and I originally saw the concept on Education.com. To make your own guess the hidden numbers or letters game you will need the following:
What you need:
4 A4 envelopes
9 pieces of white A4 paper
thick nikko pen or computer and printer
scissors
extra paper
pencil
printed copy of alphabet and numbers
What you Do:
- Cut a window into the bottom left corner of the first envelope (see photo below).
- Cut a window in each of the other envelopes on the remaining corners.
- Write or print “Guess the Hidden Number/Letter” on each envelope.
- Print out or draw a large number or letter on each piece of paper. Be sure to position the letter or number so that it will show through at least two of the windows.
- Place a number or letter into one of the envelopes.
- Show it to the child. Are they able to recognise what the number or letter is? Discuss what the child can see through the window i.e. a horizontal line in the top right window could be a 5 or a 7.
- Let the child look at the number or letter lists and then have them draw a grid of four squares on some of the extra paper. Get the child to copy what they can see through the envelope window into the appropriate square.
- Place the number or letter into another envelope if they are unable to guess it. This will give the child a different view. Again, have them look at the letter/number lists and draw what they see. What number/letter do they think it is now?
