Water Bugs

Water Bugs is a hands-on school holiday activity at Baldwin Swamp Environmental Park, giving children the opportunity to get outdoors and learn more about the tiny creatures living in local waterways. Hosted by Bundaberg Regional Council’s Natural Areas team, the activity explores how water bugs can provide clues about the health of aquatic environments.
Children will get involved in a simple waterway investigation, using a net to dip into the water and see what they can find. They will also have the chance to examine their discoveries through a magnifying glass, getting a closer look at the different water bugs found in the area. The activity provides a fun way for children to connect with nature while learning about the role water bugs play in aquatic environments. It is an interactive experience where kids can observe what lives in and around the water and gain a better understanding of how these small creatures can indicate the health of their surroundings.
Water Bugs will be held on Wednesday 23 September 2026 and Tuesday 29 September 2026, with both sessions running from 9am-10:30am. The activity will take place opposite the Lake Ellen car park, across the drain at Baldwin Swamp Environmental Park. Participants should use the footbridges to the north and south of the car park to cross the drain.
Bookings are essential, as places are limited. Children must be supervised by a parent or guardian. Participants are also asked to come prepared for an outdoor activity by wearing closed-in shoes, a hat and sunscreen, and bringing a water bottle.
