Pillowcase Program for Kids

Talking to kids about emergencies can feel tricky, and it's not always clear where to start. Living in a region that sees storms, floods and bushfires, a little preparation can go a long way. A free workshop in January is offering children a gentle, practical way to learn about being ready.
The Pillowcase Program is on Monday 11 January 2027 from 10am to 11am, run by the Childers Neighbourhood Centre. It's designed for children aged 6 to 12 and helps them prepare for, cope with and respond to an emergency. The workshop includes a discussion about why being prepared matters, along with interactive activities that help kids think calmly about what might happen and what they would want to pack in an emergency kit. Each child gets a pillowcase to decorate and take home, giving them a start on their own personal emergency kit. The workshop is free, and bookings are essential.
Children often feel more settled when they know what to expect, and a workshop like this gives them a sense of control and confidence rather than worry. Involving kids in preparation can also open up conversations at home, and may prompt families to put together or revisit their own emergency plans. By learning in a relaxed setting with other children, kids can build skills and understanding that will help them if an emergency ever does happen, and they have a decorated pillowcase to remind them of what they've learnt.
