Hinkler House: A Piece of Aviation History in Bundaberg

Hinkler House
In 1925, Bert Hinkler, the legendary Bundaberg aviator, built a modest detached house on Thornhill Estate in Southampton, England. He named it “Mon Repos,” inspired by the beachside location in his hometown of Bundaberg, Australia, where his passion for aviation first took flight.
After Bert’s tragic death in 1933, the house eventually fell under the ownership of the Southampton City Council and faced the risk of demolition. In response, the Hinkler House Memorial Museum & Research Association was established in 1983 to facilitate the relocation of the house from England back to Bundaberg, Bert’s birthplace. During May and June of that year, the house was meticulously dismantled, with each brick carefully catalogued before being transported to Australia. It was then rebuilt as a memorial museum dedicated to preserving Bert Hinkler’s remarkable legacy.
Today, self-guided tours of Hinkler House are included with admission to the Hinkler Hall of Aviation, offering visitors an opportunity to explore the life and achievements of this pioneering aviator.
