Childers Rotary loads bikes headed for the Solomons
A container loaded with donated bicycles, school stationery, pots and pans and even the kitchen sink is bound for the Solomon Islands thanks to the generosity of the Bundaberg Regional community and Childers Rotary.
Six members of the Rotary Club of Childers travelled to Brisbane last Saturday to load the container with the donated goods.
Club president John Cole said 156 bicycles had been wedged into the container along with 15 boxes of school stationery and various pots and pans. We even had three stainless steel kitchen sinks, a wheelchair and a walker among the items loaded.
It is the second time Childers Rotary has sent bikes to the Solomons. Late last year they were asked if they would like to undertake a similar project. Mr Cole said people across the Bundaberg region had been extremely generous in response to a call for the donation of unwanted bikes.
The media has certainly played a great role in assisting with this project and we were literally swamped with offers.
The container was loaded last Saturday but will not arrive in the Solomons until mid-July. Childers Rotary expect to have three or four club members on hand to unload the container and distribute the contents.
Mr Cole said Matthew Wall from Wall to Wall Cycles had co-operated with Childers Rotary in collecting the bikes. It’s incredible just how many of these donated bikes are like brand new. Bundaberg Police also provided a number of bikes that had been in their possession for some time and unclaimed.
