So what is a Little Free Library?
In 2009 Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin, built a model of a one room school house as a tribute to his mother – a former school teacher whom loved reading. He filled it with books and put it on a post in his front yard. His friends and neighbours loved it, so he built several more and gave them away. Each one had a sign that said FREE BOOKS.
As of July this year, there are over 30,000 Little Free Libraries worldwide. These little book exchanges are about community connection just as much as they’re about books and literacy. Bundaberg Regional Libraries in partnership with Bundaberg East Rotary and the Bundaberg Woodworkers, are bringing Little Free Libraries to Bundaberg later this year.
The concept is simple – bring a book, take a book, or just take a book. It’s about sharing what you’ve enjoyed reading, and discovering what someone else is reading. Each Little Free Library has a Steward, someone who looks after the structure, and Bundaberg Regional Libraries will help restock them if needed. The best part about Little Free Libraries is that they can be as crazy and whimsical as you like, let your imagination run wild with the design of your communities Little Free Library!
